Ques - A salesman gets commission on total sales at 9%. if the sale is exceeded Rs.10,000 he gets an additional commission as bonus of 3% on the excess of sales over Rs.10,000. If he gets total commission of Rs.1380, then the bonus he received is:

(a) Rs. 180

(b) Rs. 120

(c) Rs. 480

(d) data insufficient

Solution -

Let,

Total sales = x

commission on total sales = 9% of x

commission on total sales = 9x/100

bonus on commission over Rs. 10,000 sales = 3% of (x - 10,000)

= (3/100) * (x - 10000)

= (3x - 30000)/100

= (3x/100) - 300

so,

Total commission = (9x/100) + (3x/100) - 300

But,

He gets total commission = Rs.1380

(9x/100) + (3x/100) - 300 = 1380

(9x/100) + (3x/100) = 1380 + 300

12x = 1680*100

x = 168000/12

x = 14000

Therefore,

Bonus he received = (3x/100) - 300

= [(3*14000)/100 - 300]

= 420 - 300

= 120

Hence,

The correct option is (b) 120.
