Ramon d'Abadal i Calderó

(Vic, Barcelona, 1862 - Rupià, Girona, 1945) Spanish politician and lawyer. A conservative Catalanist, he was one of the main leaders of the Regionalist League, in whose foundation he participated in 1901 and which he would preside over from 1930 to 1936.

Lawyer and important rural owner, his wealth would increase when he married Mercè Fonsdeviela, daughter of the Marquis de la Torre, a prominent landowner from Empordà, at the age of forty. As a lawyer, together with Almeda and Puig de la Bellacasa, he was part of a prestigious law firm. In 1924 he was appointed dean of the Barcelona Bar Association; two years later, in the midst of the dictatorship of Primo de Rivera, his refusal to translate the institution's judicial guide into Spanish would cost him a few days in jail and exile to a town in Castellón.

Throughout his long political career he always tried to mediate between the different tendencies of the Regionalist League. Representing this party, he would hold various public positions: councilor of the Barcelona City Council (in 1903 and 1911), senator (in 1907 and 1918) and president of the Assembly of Parliamentarians in 1917. For the same training he was a deputy to the Cortes and a member of the Catalan Parliament during the Republic. At the outbreak of civil war he went to France and Italy. After the war he returned to Barcelona, where he lived his last years away from all political activity.
