Eighty-sixth Constitutional Amendment, 2002

The amended provisions of the Constitution through the 86th Constitutional Amendment-

 

1. Elementary education was made a fundamental right. The new Article 21A declared that 'States should provide free elementary education to children between the ages of 6 and 14 years'.

 

2. Content of article 45 changed in the case of Directive Principles. The State shall endeavor to provide for free and compulsory education to all children till they complete the age of fourteen years.'

 

3. A new Fundamental Duty was added under Article 51A which read, “It shall be the duty of every Indian citizen to provide facilities to his child, whether his parent or guardian, of education up to the age of 6 and 14 years. "
