What is stress?

The definition of stress implies a feeling of tension that arises as a result of a stressor stimulus, that is, of an external or internal event that represents a challenge or a demand for the subject. Punctual or acute stress is expected and necessary to be able to face new or challenging situations that arise. It helps us to face dangerous or problematic situations.

However, when stress is chronic, that is, it lasts over time, it can have harmful consequences for health. Being in a state of stress positions the subject in an attitude of constant alertness, often feeling that the situation is beyond him or that he does not have the resources to face it.

Live with stress.

Many times we don't feel stressed, we don't register it. We are immersed in daily tasks pretending to continue with the usual rhythms. However, it is the body that begins to manifest ailments. If we don't stop the rhythm, the inconvenience occurs without completely resolving.

In these moments the body marks the need to stop. Sometimes you try to cancel, eliminate these ailments as soon as possible in order to quickly continue with the previous rhythm but, in general, the symptoms manifest themselves in different ways in order to be heard.

Living with chronic stress prevents a true connection with our bonds, projects, and purposes. The person is chronically alert and all his psychic energy is oriented towards avoiding or solving problems, preventing his orientation towards other areas that are essential for health.

Stress Societies.

Much of the reason why stress is so prevalent today has to do with the fact that our globalized society of consumption and speed implies stress for its functioning. The new needs that are constantly created, the dissatisfaction, and the rhythms of the economic and labor structures imply the development of a certain amount of stress.

Knowing a little more, having a little more, running to get to that other place that in theory would be better than the current one requires stress.

In societies in which the basic structures and institutions are weak, the development of stress is even greater. The individual feels alone, having to face challenges and demands without having support networks.

Psychosomatic illnesses and stress.

Stress is the main cause of so-called psychosomatic illnesses. The most frequent are: arterial hypertension, irritable colon, gastrointestinal ulcers, dermatological diseases among which is psoriasis, allergies, asthma, among many others. Beyond the organic aspects that occur, it is important to work on the psychological aspect and be able to treat it to avoid the development of this type of condition.

Depression and anxiety are also pictures associated with stress. Both are so common today.

Chronic stress inevitably leads to health problems. In order to detect it, it is essential to denaturalize its manifestation, registering changes in mood, sleep, and body, in order to slow down and take actions that help its treatment.

Treatment.

As the triggers of stress vary according to the individual, it is interesting to approach from a psychological therapy what are the causes of chronic stress of that particular person, in order to help them disarm those mechanisms in which their health is put at risk. If the cause is not attended to from this space, no matter how much the specific symptom is treated, it will persist, repeat itself, or be translated into another form of manifestation.
