Major Dams / Hydro Electric Projects of Uttarakhand
Uttarakhand Dam – Major dams / hydroelectric projects of Uttarakhand are given below:
Electric power generation, transmission, distribution, and operation in Uttarakhand are done by the following institutions-
Uttarakhand Vidyut Nigam-: Established on 1st April 2001.
THDC (Tehri Hydro Development Corporation)-: Established on 12th July 1988.
PTCUL (POWER TRANSMISSION CORPORATION OF UTTARAKHAND LIMITED)-: Established on 1st June 2004.
UPCL (Uttarakhand Power Corporation Limited)-: It works under Uttarakhand Electricity Corporation only.
UREDA (Uttarakhand Renewable Energy Development Agency)-: Established in 2001 at Almora.
Major Hydro-Power Projects:
Glogi Hydroelectric Project
- Glogi Hydroelectric Project is located at Bhatta Falls in Mussoorie
- It has a capacity of 1000 MW
- Glogi Hydroelectric Project is the first hydroelectric project in Uttarakhand, in which electricity is being produced since 1909.
Tehri Project
- Tehri Hydroelectric Project is located in Tehri at the confluence of the Bhagirathi and Bhilangana rivers.
- Presently Tehri Dam is the highest dam in Asia, whose height is 260.5 meters, due to its vastness it has been called the village of the nation.
- Tehri Dam has a total power generation capacity of 2400 MW.
- The total water holding capacity of Tehri Dam is 354 crore cubic meters and its reservoir is spread over 42 sq km, which is known as Swami Ramtirth Sagar.
- The Tehri project was approved by the Planning Commission in 1972 and its construction was started by the Irrigation Department in 1978, due to the slow progress of the work, in 1988 the responsibility of its construction was given to the Tehri Water Dam Corporation.

- The people of Tehri also opposed the Tehri dam due to displacement, in 1978, an anti-dam committee was formed in Tehri to oppose the dam.
Vishnu Prayag Hydroelectric Project
- Vishnu Prayag Hydroelectric Project is located on the Alaknanda River in the Chamoli district.
- It has a total capacity of 650 MW.
Dhauliganga Project
- The Dhauliganga project is located on the Dhauliganga river in Dharchula of Pithoragarh district.
- It has a total capacity of 280 MW which was commissioned in 2005.
- Cut off wall technique is used in this project
Pancheshwar Dam Project
- Pancheshwar Dam Project is a hydroelectric project to be built in the Champawat district of Uttarakhand.

- Maneri Bhali Project – Bhagirathi, 90 MW, Uttarkashi
- Srinagar Hydro Electric Project – Alaknanda, 330 MW, Srinagar
- Pathri Project – Ganga Canal, 20 MW, Haridwar
- Khatima Project – Sharda, 41 MW, Udham Singh Nagar
- Chhibro Project – Tons, 240 MW, Dehradun
- Ramganga Project – Ramganga, 198 MW, Pauri
- Tanakpur Project – Sharda, 120 MW, Champawat
