Optimism: What does it imply?

Definition of optimism: Tendency to see and judge things in their most positive or most favorable aspect.

From this general definition, we can analyze the characteristics of optimism and the nuances that appear in different people. Optimism is related to hope. Or at least, with a hopeful position regarding the future, and regarding how events will be resolved. It is a trait that implies the possibility of metabolizing situations and extracting what can be positive or beneficial.

Optimism can be confused or amalgamated with innocence. And for not feeling that he is falling into innocence, sometimes skepticism wins. Skepticism is generally present in those who want to avoid being deceived by all possible means, and they defend themselves by pretending to anticipate all possible unfavorable results. Thus, an attitude of mistrust and despair is configured in front of the world, where it is assumed in advance that nothing good can happen. This is a very inflexible shelter and one that often leaves people immobilized.

Optimism does not necessarily imply innocence. Although some innocence in the apprehension of the world is not a problem either, on the contrary, it allows us to wonder, curiosity, and, precisely, hope. But an excess of innocence can be conflictive because it keeps us immersed in an illusory world that is far from what we often find.

Optimism implies, in the best of cases, being able to recognize the risks and potentially unfavorable situations, but still weighing and highlighting something positive in what is experienced: something that implies learning, or the possibility of a change in the future. , for example.

Very optimistic people tend to have confidence in the future and this is usually associated with self-confidence. In this sense, trust in oneself and in the world are reciprocal. Trust is something very important to develop, it implies a sense of security, of belonging, which enables changes. Optimism implies a position in which one trusts that conflicts will be resolved, despite the negative issues that arise.

Optimism can be confused with denial and idealization.

Idealizing implies not observing the negative or conflicting aspects of a person or situation and highlighting only the positive characteristics. Idealizing prevents us from seeing things with their lights and shadows, and places us in a position that makes it difficult to move forward and resolve conflicts.

Denial implies the avoidance of conflict, it is the invisibility of certain situations or characteristics, acting as if they did not exist. Both, closely related, are defense mechanisms that are sometimes present in people who see themselves as optimistic. They make jokes constantly and find it difficult to connect with anguish or problems, for example. Or they idealize future situations, or people by engulfing themselves in illusory bubbles. It is very important to distinguish these aspects because optimism is often confused with them.

Optimism does not necessarily imply these mechanisms, but rather, as stated above, it is an ability to evaluate and extract a beneficial or productive aspect from situations.
