(Amsterdam, 1914) Dutch poet. Lyrical author of relatively late vocation, he became known with the collection of poems Het gevecht met de Muze ( The fight with the Muse, 1940), in which an aspiration for rigor and formal perfection can be seen that would become a constant in the lyrical production of him; death and religious sentiment are recurring themes. The following year he published Het zanduur van de dood ( The Hourglass of Death, 1941). The book that earned him his greatest literary recognition was Een voetreis naar Rome (1946), a volume dominated by the intimate religious sentiment that, in 1936, had led Aafjes to make a pilgrimage on foot to the Holy City of Catholicism.
