Väinö Aaltonen

(Karinainen, 1894 - Helsinki, 1966) Finnish sculptor. After studying drawing at the Turku Art Association School of Painting, he decided to experiment with sculpture, which he would eventually dedicate himself to. He began working with granite, but immediately used all kinds of materials, from glass to silver. His first works in granite were faithful to traditional naturalism, although they differed from those by their direct carving technique. From 1920 he was influenced by post-cubism prevailing in Europe. He began exhibiting in 1915 and has since participated in a large number of international exhibitions. He was awarded in Vienna (1936) and at the Universal Exhibition in Paris (1937). Among his works stands out the memorial of the Finnish Liberation War,
