Ques - By selling 12 apples for a rupee, a man loses 20%. How many for a rupee should he sell to gain 20%?

(a) 8

(b) 10

(c) 15

(d) 16

Solution -

Let,

CP of 1 apple = x

SP of 12 apples = 100 paise

SP of 1 apple = 100/12

A man loses 20%.

SP = x (80/100)

SP = 0.8x

But,

SP = 100/12

0.8x = 100/12

x = (100/12) / 0.8

x = 100/9.6 Paise

So,

CP of 1 apple = 100/9.6

He should sell to gain 20%.

New SP of 1 apple = CP × profit

= (100/9.6) × (120/100)

= (100/9.6) × 1.20

New SP of 1 apple = 100/8 paise

New SP of 8 apples = 100 paise (Rs. 1)

Hence,

The correct answer is option (a) 8.
