Curiosity, why is it important?

Curiosity is a concept that is not talked about very often. However, it is extremely important for the individual and collective development of human beings.

Curiosity is a mechanism that allows us to find new adaptive resources. That is why it initially arises intuitively and is related to the perception of a mystery, of something uncertain, hidden and unattainable, and with the desire to reach it.

Thanks to curiosity we were evolving and adapting to the new circumstances that were presented to us. It is the step prior to creative deployment, it is the initial question, that sets the entire search mechanism in motion.

In childhood, curiosity is a healthy trait. Boys and girls already early develop what Freud called the Drive to Know. This is an impulse that leads to investigate, to try to find the background of things. The famous "whys" stage is associated with this. This curiosity also includes sexual aspects, children's curiosity about sexuality and exploration can be censored or restricted by parents, which is why the drive to know in the future can be blocked.

Curiosity is at the base of learning processes and creative development, it is associated with desire, the engine that drives the personal search. If curiosity is extinguished, there is no possible movement, and we remain within the framework of what is already known, stillness, sameness.

In processes of self-knowledge and therapeutic work, a certain amount of curiosity is also necessary. We are delving into issues of ourselves that we do not master and do not know. Compromising with the unconscious implies the risk of getting out of the known security, knowing that we will investigate a terrain in which we do not know what we are going to find. This is a great challenge that people who are willing to do deep work take on. Without curiosity and without interest in entering the unknown, no deep work is possible. Or it will always remain on a more superficial plane.

Curiosity can only intervene if we accept that we do not control everything. There has to be a record of acknowledgment of uncertainty for that search energy to be mobilized. In people with a lot of inflexibility and self-control, this can imply an excessive risk, a fear of disturbing the calm waters, and a need to leave everything in the plane of the known.

"Curiosity killed the cat" goes this popular phrase. And with this, he shows us the idea of ​​risk around being curious. A risk that many people go to great lengths to avoid. Without curiosity, however, and without that risk, there is no movement. These elections are effectively those that make it possible to move on to another instance.

Curiosity is the prelude to change, that which allows us to investigate and search, even if we accept that we will never know everything.
