Fuel is basically a substance that generates chemical or nuclear energy. Different types of fuels are used for different purposes. Some of these functions are warming, heating, cooking, production of industrial goods, moving machinery, etc. Fuels generate chemical and nuclear energy in the form of heat. These are easily used to accomplish various tasks. Petrol, diesel, LPG, wood, coal tar, dung, coal, methane, coal gas, water gas and kerosene are some examples of fuels.

Fuels were initially recognized as substances that released only chemical energy. However, soon those substances were included in this category which produced nuclear energy. These were used to accomplish various tasks. The things we rely on and cannot imagine our life without them these days are called fuel.

Fuels used in our day to day life

There are different fuels used in our daily life. Here is a look at the most commonly used fuels:

  • Petrol/Diesel/CNG

Cars, buses, scooters or bikes that we use for commuting to different places run on petrol, diesel or CNG. These are secondary fuels obtained from petroleum and natural gases. The cost of manufacturing and producing these fuels is very high and thus quite expensive.

  • LPG / LPG

Liquefied/Liquefied Petroleum Gas or LPG is popularly used for cooking. Natural gases are used for various routine tasks such as heating a room, operating a water heater, etc. These gases burn cleanly and do not pollute the air.

These solids are those that generate heat and light energy from the process of combustion. There are different solid fuels which are used for different purposes. These include wood, pellets, charcoal, peat, coal, biomass, municipal waste and coke. Compared to liquid and gaseous fuels, most solid fuels are readily available. Solid fuels are cheaper than the other two forms.

On the downside, solid fuels are heavy and difficult to transport. They require a good amount of air for proper combustion. The thermal energy of solid fuel is low.

These are combustible molecules that are brought together to generate mechanical energy. Some examples of liquid fuels include gasoline, diesel, liquefied/liquefied petroleum gas and compressed natural gas. Since the liquid takes the form of the object in which it is poured, the liquid fuel is relatively easy to carry. There is no dust or ash formation when these fuels are burnt. These are used as internal combustion fuels.

On the downside, liquid fuel is quite expensive. Most of these are highly flammable and thus their storage is quite risky. They are also known to smell bad.

These are fuels available in gaseous forms. While some of these fuels are freely available in nature, some, such as natural gas, are derived from other substances. Gaseous fuels produced from solid fuels such as coal and biomass are called coal gas and biomass gas. Gases produced from liquid fuels such as petroleum include refinery gas and liquefied/liquefied petroleum gas.

Gaseous fuels can be easily moved through pipelines. Unlike liquid and solid fuels, gaseous fuels do not produce any smoke. They are comparatively neat when it comes to handling them. They can be lit even with little air supply.

On the downside, they are highly flammable and therefore there is a risk involved in their storage. These are quite expensive and also require heavy tanks for storage.

What are fossil fuels ?

Fossil fuels take millions of years to form. Thus these are often referred to as non-renewable energies. These fuels are produced from naturally occurring changes in the dead remains of animals and plants over centuries.

There are mainly three types of fossil fuels. Coal which is a solid fossil fuel, oil which is a liquid fossil fuel and natural gas which is a gaseous fossil fuel. They are used for everyday tasks such as generating electricity, heating rooms in the house or office, driving your vehicle, etc. We depend on these fuels for all these functions. With the use of these fuels, our life has become simple and comfortable.

However, these fuels also have their downsides. The supply of these fuels is limited and the demand is high. That's why their price is high. In addition they take centuries to generate and are almost non-renewable. They are declining rapidly. Another main problem with fossil fuels is that they release carbon dioxide gas when burned and this increases the level of pollution in the atmosphere. The increasing use of fossil fuels is a major cause of global warming.

Major producers of fossil fuels around the world include China, Saudi Arabia, the United States, Russia, Canada, and Indonesia.

What are Biofuels ?

These fuels are generated from biomass which includes plant and animal waste, municipal waste as well as waste from food, agriculture and other industries. The waste products used to produce biofuels should not be too old. For example, biofuels are made from freshly harvested plants rather than fossil fuels that take millions of years to generate. Burning these fuels produces fewer greenhouse gases than fossil fuels. However, they are more expensive than fossil fuels.

Biofuels are divided into two categories – primary biofuels and secondary biofuels. While primary biofuels are used in unprocessed form, secondary biofuels are used after being processed. Some examples of biofuels include green diesel which is produced from algae and some other plant waste, biofuel which is produced with the help of vegetable oils and liquid animal fats and biogas which is produced from animal waste and other organic material. .

Biofuels are mainly produced to replace fossil fuels such as diesel, coal and gasoline. The US, Brazil, France, China, Argentina and Germany are among the top biofuel producers.

Renewable fuels are safer to use because the gases they generate are not as harmful as those emitted by non-renewable fuels.

Non-renewable fuels as the name implies are those fuels that cannot be renewed. These fuels take many years to generate and once they are used, they expire. These cannot be replenished and that is why they are fast depleting. The time will not be far when they will be completely finished. Apart from this, the amount of pollution emitted by them is very high. Most of the non-renewable fuels are the main element of fossil fuels which contains carbon. While burning they emit carbon dioxide and other harmful gases which are increasing the problem of global warming.

However these fuels provide higher energy than many renewable fuels. They are also easy to burn.

Save fuel for future generations

With the increasing technology and changing lifestyle, the consumption of fuels like petroleum, natural gases and coal has increased manifold. However, most of these are currently available in abundance and many of these are renewable fuels. However, if we continue to use them at the same pace, they may be exhausted very soon. Here's further how we can do our bit to save fuel for future generations:

  • use with care

You should make sure that you use all the equipment that runs on different fuels carefully. Turning off the lights while locking the room, cooking on a low flame, car pooling, etc. can make a difference.

  • be smart

There are many energy efficient appliances. You have to use such devices to save fuel. A common example of this is the CFL. You can replace the regular lighting fixtures in your home with energy efficient CFL or LED lights to save electricity.

  • limit use

You have to limit the use of air conditioners and room heaters. These devices not only use substantial amount of fuel energy but also have a bad effect on your health as well as the environment as a whole. You can lower the temperature of your home or heat it in an eco-friendly way.
