How to disconnect from work?
Posted on 20-03-2022

The problem of work addiction or stress problems related to work are more and more present in recent times. We often hear about burn-out and the term workaholic in institutional and business areas.

Economic instability and difficulties making ends meet increase work stress. Those who do not have these problems, however, usually enter the productive wheel. Sometimes with a lot of difficulties to get out of there.

We know that the current competitiveness system prioritizes performance and production, to the detriment of the health of the people who are part of these processes. However, companies and institutions have been looking for alternatives for some time, since they notice that employees who are not well cannot work effectively either.

It is essential to be able to raise awareness about mental health aspects of the working population and to be able to work on prevention and health promotion to prevent certain problems from advancing or worsening. The emphasis should not be on ensuring that productivity is not lost, but rather on ensuring that areas of individuals' lives that are very important to their health and development are respected.

Unfortunately, the less basic needs are covered, the less chance there is that these aspects can be carried out. In the same way, not all people can access the activities described here, because a large part of their day-to-day life is invested in obtaining what is necessary to survive.

Beyond this, it is considered that much can be implemented in different contexts, depending on the focus and the characteristics of the chosen activities. Sport and art in a community context are very common and effective preventive and health-promoting tools, for example.

Going into the tools to be able to disconnect from work, we will say in principle that in most cases the person cannot voluntarily disconnect from work because there are unconscious issues linked to it. It is not a question of lack of will, therefore, it is not necessarily going to be resolved by reading these proposals. However, knowing them as an important part of a person's healthy life can help raise awareness of how often this is part of everyday life, perhaps functioning as a self-registration and allowing help to be sought when needed.

Disconnecting from work truly implies being able to direct energy towards something unrelated to it. Some of the most important areas and activities that should take place are:

  • Activities that generate pleasure and are carried out solely for this, and for no other purpose. A large number of artistic proposals enter here. Sometimes people include in their "hobbies" activities that have another purpose in the background (gymnastics, to lose weight, for example; or activities that appear to be leisure but are actually linked to duty or requirement. for Example reading, but work-related books).
  • Relax time. They imply a connection with the body and its needs, they allow us to break with the daily whirlwind and attend to the internal world: yoga and meditation, for example.
  • Physical download time. This is where physical activities come in, related to health also from an organic point of view. Walk, dance, run, swim, ride a bike. Activities involving an amount of discharge through the body.
  • Link time. Meeting with friends or family, but involving conversations or activities not related to the world of work.
  • Outdoor time, and in contact with nature.

These areas should be respected and cared for. They should have an important place in the lives of the workers to promote the comprehensive health of the communities.
