What does PAS stand for? And what would the denomination Highly Sensitive Persons refer to?

First of all, it is worth clarifying that it is very important not to take these characterizations literally and inflexibly.

The acronym PAS does not correspond to a disease or disorder, it is a way of characterizing traits that were observed by the American psychologist Elaine Aron, coining, as a result, a concept that groups them together.

People with these traits would have a more developed neurosensory system than most. That is, they are more sensitive to the sensory process itself. Everything they perceive from the internal and external environment generates a very significant impact on them.

They tend to perceive more subtleties than most people, they are very observant and tend to easily absorb what is happening around them.

These characteristics imply great creative potential because they are people who sensitively receive a large amount of information and details from the environment, positioning themselves from a sensitive perspective in the face of what happens to them.

This ability to experience so vividly gives them insight, empathy, and the ability to develop deep reflections. However, this itself can lead to a strong tendency to become overwhelmed or stressed. 

Since the stimuli impact your sensory system in a very intense way, all the associated emotions are usually magnified.

They tend to get stressed, then, very easily, being like sponges in their environment and incorporating for themselves much of what happens around them.

This means that it is sometimes a challenge to separate yourself from what is happening to other people or downplay certain contentious issues. Everything that is said to them is usually taken personally, and it is difficult for them to ignore an affront.

They tend to be easily overstimulated since, as we mentioned before, each stimulus has a great impact and they tend to be very permeable.

Self-care is very important in people with traits of this type because they can frequently become saturated, entering circles of mental and emotional exhaustion, in need of quiet spaces that guarantee a reduction in stimuli in order to recover.

As we know, sustained stress over time and constant alertness can result in other health complications, and for this reason, it is important to take precautions if the sensitivity of this type is observed.

People with these traits have great listening skills and are easily moved by what happens to other people. This is very important in terms of their position as generators of social change.

But it is essential that they set limits and that they know these characteristics in themselves. This way they will be able to make it visible ahead of time and allow themselves a break that reduces the possibility of developing stress or anxiety.
