What is an imagotype?

An imagotype is a type of logo that is graphically composed of both an image and words, without these being grouped under the same drawing. In other words, it is the graphic representation of a brand or company through one or several words together with an icon.

In this sense, the concept of imagotype derives from the fusion of the words image, logo, and type. The first refers to the present icon, while the second refers to the presence of a word. "Type" refers to the brand it identifies.

Like any logo, an imagotype has the purpose of facilitating the recognition of the brand by the audience. Therefore, it must transmit the essence of the company through a graphic design according to its objectives and values.

Characteristics of an image

The imagotype is one of the most complete forms of visual representation that exist for companies since it has the following characteristics:

  • Clarity: Although it works simultaneously with images and words, an image must maintain the clarity of its parts in the design. Thus, the graphic part will be perfectly differentiated from the logos or words.
  • Balance: although the elements are differentiated, they intermingle with each other in a harmonic way. Neither the words nor the icon should take precedence over the other. In this way, the visual message is transmitted in unison.
  • Simplicity – Although it combines two different graphic elements, it maintains its simplicity in order to be easily remembered. In addition, this favors the reproduction of the image in different media and sizes.
  • Representative: an imagotype represents the most essential characteristics of the company. For example, if it is a transport company, the image should be allusive to this, while if the company follows ecological practices, it could be a green bus.
  • Detachable: The imagotype can be separated into two parts (icon and words). However, even separated, these parts must represent the brand and be identified with it, since sometimes they may have to be used as the only logo in spaces that admit only one image or only words.
