Ques - In an examination 70% of the candidates passed in History and 50% in Geography and 20% students failed in both the subjects. If 500 students passed in both the subjects, then how many candidates appeared for the exam ?

Solution -
Let,
Total no. of candidate appeared for the exam = 100x
No. of candidates passed in History = 70% of 100x
= (70/100) * 100x
= 70x
No. of candidates failed in History = 100 - 70 = 30x
No. of candidates passed in Geography = 50% of 100x
= (50/100) * 100x
= 50x
No. of candidates failed in Geography = 100x - 50x = 50x
No. of candidates failed in both = 20% of 100x = 20x
Total failed candidates = 30x + 50x - 20x = 60x
Passed in both = 100x - 60x
Passed in both = 40x
40x = 500(given passed in both the subjects)
x = 500/40
x = 25/2
Total no. of candidate appeared for the exam = 100x
= 100 * (25/2)
= 1250
Hence,
