What is Interculturalism?

Interculturalism refers to the line of thought or doctrine that promotes the exchange of cultural values ​​between two or more cultures. It implies, therefore, cultural interaction. The value on which this doctrine is based is called interculturality.

The word interculturalism is formed by the prefix inter, which means 'between' or 'at intervals'; it is also formed by the word culture, which at its root alludes to 'cultivate' and, finally, by the suffix ism, which indicates 'doctrine'.

As a doctrine of thought, interculturalism aims to promote mutual respect for cultural differences and their associated elements, such as religion and ethnic differences. It also involves the active principle of opening spaces for interaction and communication that allow healthy coexistence between groups of different cultures, with a view to mutual growth.

In its deepest sense, interculturalism is a doctrine of a democratic and dialogical nature with the context. It highlights the need to go beyond mere "tolerance" to a truly personal and social encounter.

Difference Between Interculturalism and Multiculturalism

Both terms seem equivalent but they are not. Multiculturalism hardly supposes the coexistence of multiple cultures in a common space, but it does not necessarily imply the interaction between them. At a time when cultures interact and build bridges of dialogue for the learning of shared knowledge, we speak of interculturalism.
