What is a promotion?

A promotion is a process in which a good or service is offered, disclosing said information in order to attract the consumer to make the purchase.

This action is based on the product to be exhibited, taking into account the price, the benefits, the characteristics, the intention with which said the promotion is carried out, among others, these variants are important and must be taken into account if you want to promote the product in an optimal way.

Promotion is an essential element in marketing since it allows us to publicize the product in question and offer it effectively, giving the offeror a certain power of persuasion and provoking a certain degree of influence on consumers. Therefore, promoting a good or service will always be an important task in the business environment, since, with this, it is transmitted that the product is the right one to satisfy certain needs.

Types of promotion

The main types of promotion are listed below:

  • International promotion: one whose range of operation does not have geographical limitations, that is, it is valid in more than one country.
  • National promotion: one whose range of operation has geographical limitations comprised by the territory of a given country.
  • Regional promotion: one whose range of operations has geographical limitations comprised by a certain geographical zone of a certain country.
  • Municipal promotion: one whose range of operations has geographical limitations comprised of a geographical area corresponding to a municipality.
  • Price-based promotion: one that is based on a decrease in the price of the good or service to execute its operations, this type of promotion usually operates in conjunction with the exclusive promotion.
  • Stock-limited promotion: one that is based on a limited amount of stock of goods or services to execute its operations, that is, it promotes a reduced amount of goods or services.
  • Exclusive promotion: one that is based on distinctive goods or services to execute its operations, either due to its characteristics, the quantity available, or its price.
  • Promotion limited by time: one that is based on a specific time interval to execute your operations, this period can be comprised of a few hours, a day, or even a week.
  • Online promotion: one that uses the internet to execute its operations, this type of promotion is carried out through a digital platform.
  • Personalized promotion: one that is carried out in a unique way, previously studying and analyzing the individual, knowing their possible tastes, and determining relevant factors. This type of promotion is designed and sent directly to the chosen consumer.

Promotion Objectives

The main objectives of the promotion are listed below:

  • Grant the offeror a certain degree of conviction.
  • Influence the consumer so that he chooses to choose the product.
  • Expose and offer a good or service.
  • Boost sales of a good or service.
  • Generate a certain degree of empathy with the consumer, in order to generate a sale.
  • Attract a specific audience so that they become familiar with and learn about the promoted product and the company behind it.

  • In order to generate more sales, a supermarket decides to reduce prices in its grocery section and promote it on television.
  • An appliance store decides to make pamphlets in which information regarding said store appears.
  • A carpenter in order to attract new customers decides to launch a limited number of new products and promote them through the radio.
  • A barbershop has a strategy to retain its customers, to do so it is promoted through the internet on its Facebook page.
  • A company responsible for the manufacture and distribution of mattresses in Colombia carries out an advertising campaign in which it sends personalized promotions to its customers via email.
