Ques - Three candidates A, B and C contested an election. Out of these total votes on a voter list 25% did not vote and 6.66% votes polled were invalid. C got 2450 valid votes, which were 40% more than that of B. If A got only 40% of the total votes, then who is the winner?

(a) A

(b) B

(c) C

(d) Can't be determined

Solution -

Let,

Total number of votes = 10,000

Percentage of people who did not vote = 25% of 10,000

= (25/100) × 10,000

= 2500

Percentage of people who vote = 10,000 - 2500

= 7500

Percentage of Polled votes which are invalid = 6.66%

Polled votes which are invalid = 6.66% of 7500

= (6.66/100) × 7500

= 499.5

Polled votes which are valid = 7500 - 499.5

= 7000.5

A got only 40% of total votes

= 40% of 7000x      [7000.5 = 7000(approx)]

= (40/100) × 7000x

= 2800

C = 2450 (given)

A + B + C = 7000

2800 + B + 2450 = 7000

5250 + B = 7000

B = 7000 - 5250

B = 1750

So,

A = 2800

B = 2450

C = 1750

Therefore,

A is the winner.

Hence,

The correct option is (a) A.
