Ques - Two candidates fought an election. One got 65% of the votes and won by 600 votes. The total number of votes polled is :

(a) 12,000

(b) 8,000

(c) 2,000

(d) 4,000

Solution -

Let,

The total number of votes = x

One got the votes = 65%

  = 65% of x

Other got = (100% - 65%) of x

  = 35% of x

Now,

One who got 65% of the votes, won by votes = 600

One who won the votes - Other candidate  = 600

  65% of x - 35% of x  = 600

  30/100 * x = 600

  x  = (600/30) × 100

      x  = 2000

Hence,

The total number of votes polled is 2,000.
