Who was Araiyar, anyway?
Answer:
Araiyar was a title that was a Chief within the Chola Empire. Some landowners who were extremely wealthy received important offices at the Centre during the rule of Chola Kings. As a gesture of respect, the Chola King gave these landowners important offices at the Centre.
Muvendavelan, another important title, was also given during the Chola empire. The affairs of the state were largely controlled by Vellala-educated peasants who lived under the Central Chola Government.
