In this article, we are going to refer to sustained stress over time. One that does not simply imply the development of anxiety in the face of a new situation, for example, which is, in fact, expected. But the type of chronic stress that triggers discomfort and ailments that can lead to the development of a large number of psychosomatic illnesses.

Stress can manifest itself in a variety of ways, and its symptoms vary from person to person. However, it is important to know the most frequent ones in order to be able to detect them initially and take actions that help minimize their effects or reduce the cause that produces them.

Stress is currently present in the vast majority of the population. The situations of the system in which we live require a rhythm that is difficult to cope with physically and psychologically. The signs that appear are sometimes not recognized as typical of stress, so the possibility of intervening adequately is dilated or directly canceled. Sometimes, if not in most cases, intervention is made when the stress has progressed and is manifesting itself through more insidious symptoms.

By knowing the wide spectrum of manifestations, we enable early detection and help curb demands or run away from places that exacerbate stress. It is very important, of course, to have the necessary medical check-ups in order to establish a diagnosis. These are symptoms that can correspond to many different pathologies and will not necessarily be the product of stress.

In general, it is after the medical studies that the probability of stress is evaluated and other types of actions must be taken in this regard: consult a psychologist and make changes in the routine.

Some of the most frequent symptoms are:

Headaches: headaches and migraines.

Tiredness. Mental and physical exhaustion. Difficulty waking up, carrying out daily tasks, concentrating.

Muscle pain and contractures. Body aches, cervical stiffness, or various contractures.

Sleep problems: Insomnia, difficulty falling asleep, or sleep interruptions. Rest is not fully achieved, it feels unrested, or sleep is so light that it is easily interrupted.

Anxiety: constant alertness, acceleration of thought, and physical symptoms such as tremors, sweating, shortness of breath, dizziness, and palpitations, among others.

Stomach aches and gastrointestinal problems: bloating, acidity, changes in intestinal rhythm, pain.

Low sexual libido, changes or alterations in the menstrual cycle.

Sudden changes in mood, irritability, anger, anguish.

Alterations in links. Conflicts with close ties, difficulty in maintaining bonds of friendship and leisure spaces.

Insecurity, doubts, distrust, recurrent, intrusive, and/or fatalistic thoughts.

Depression: Many symptoms have already been mentioned above. Low energy, apathy, anguish, feelings of guilt, and undervaluation, among others.

Hair loss, skin manifestations, sores, or gum and mouth problems (also associated with gastrointestinal problems).

The difficulty for enjoyment. Feeling of not being able to disconnect from occupations.

Low defenses, colds, infections, or recurrent illnesses.

These are some symptoms of stress and it is important to know them in order to detect the incipient signs. In the presence of physical symptoms, a medical check-up should always be done first to rule out any other cause. And then, consult with a mental health professional to be able to act on the issue of stress in particular.
